Some people dream of the ultimate merge of man and machine. Scientists are showing us the possibilities. Philosophers discuss the implications of these technologies with us. And artists make our emotions towards this issue explicit. 

The creation of super humans with new sensory abilities, enhanced brain power, eternal memories and extreme physical strength. Body parts can be replaced by robotics, and ultimately, human enhancement could mean the end of aging. What will be the future of human enhancement? Does technology have an agenda of its own or is it up to societies if and how human enhancement is to proceed?

Join the Dutch Future Society on September 5th for its annual event, Your Brain in 2030: Merging Man and Machine. SCIENCE | Jason Farquhar | Donders Insitute

Dr. Jason Farquhar will talk about brain computer interfaces now and in the future. His publications on BCIs focus on developing new mental tasks and new signal analysis and machine learning techniques to improve the performance, robustness and usability of BCIs. In other words – Jason can explain what is happening at the fringe of man-machine interactions.

His background is in computer science and engineering. He coordinates the Program committee for the Artificial Intelligence Masters program at Radboud University and teaches about Brain Computer Interfaces at both Bachelor and Master level.  He co-leads the dondersBCI lab at the Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behaviour.

PHILOSOPHY | Laurens Landeweerd | Radboud University

After the gene-centrist worldview of the early 2000s, emerging research in the neurosciences now carries along a neurocentrist worldview: we are our brain. Our identities are nothing more than the software running on the hardware of our neurowired brains. Still, many neuroscientists agree that neuroscientific research yields more questions over human identity than it is resolving them. Will we indeed be able to upload our minds to a computer? What is the relation between the noosphere – the sum of all knowledge, thought and information – and the technosphere – the sum of all technologies we produce?

Laurens Landeweerd (philosopher) uses of the ‘genres of the imagination’ (art, theatre, film and literature) to diagnose ongoing debates on science and technology. He focuses on various emerging technologies including synthetic biology, brain imaging and human enhancement. Landeweerd works for Radboud University’s Institute for Science, Innovation and Society and for the iArts programme of Hogeschool Zuyd (Maastricht).

ART | Hannes Wiedemann | Artist, photographer

Human enhancement and DIY. Not two concepts that many of us would combine. Hannes Wiedemann, a Berlin-based artist and photographer, studied a fringe community that does just that: DIY cyborgs hack their own bodies. For fun.

Hannes will show us his work and talk about his experiences with those who don’t just talk about the future of human enhancement, but literally live it. He will talk about their radical ideas about open source innovation, how these DIY cyborgs view their own bodies as open source systems. And how the esthetics this community uses can be described as retro-futuristic, an unexpected mixture between past and future. Read his story in this Wired-article.

We treat the electronic systems we invent as our slaves. However, with the increasing complexity of their sensoria and information processing abilities, they are becoming more like us. Are we supposed to treat them differently? Are we able to understand the way a machine experiences its surroundings?

Does your laptop feel your fingers on its trackpad? Did we program Furby to be plagued by separation anxiety? Are our modems tormented with the afterimages of our YouTube binging? Jelger Kroese – An interactive plant as a learning interface

By integrating a system of sensors and machine learning algorithms in a living plant, we can turn the plant into an interactive educational object. This combines the benefits that both digital tools and the real-life physical experience of nature yield for nature education.

The system enables people to interact directly with living plants to receive information about the parts of the plant that they are interacting with. By touching, smelling and looking at the plant, people can engage in a playful interactive dialogue that aims to teach them about the plant and its environment. This enables a form of experiential learning that integrates cognitive and affective domains in a free-choice learning setting.

Roland van Dierendonck – Return to Dilmun

A digital image is translated into synthetic DNA, using a special method. The picture information stored as biochemical molecules allows image retouching using the CRISPR/Cas method.

The CRISPR/Cas system is a prokaryotic immune system, that provides adaptive (acquired) immunity against foreign genetic elements, such as bacteriophage genome injection. In the life sciences this system has been modified for efficient genome editing.

In two types of in vitro experiments we performed image manipulation at the level of molecules. In one we made experiments aiming on efficient on-target cleavage with full length guide RNAs (sgRNA), consisting of 20 nucleotides. In the off-target experiments we decreased the efficiency using sgRNAs with 15 and 12 nucleotides, making indel mutations visible.

The work was presented in the exhibition Nature Animée #2 in April 2017. The experiments were conducted at the Open Wetlab from the Waag Society and were partly financed by the Arts and Culture Division of the Federal Chancellery of Austria via pavillon_35 –  Nature Animée #2.
